6 Movies That Will Inspire Your Travel Bucket List

By Brittany Loeffler on September 3, 2018

We all have a travel bucket list. Whether if it’s a list of places you’d like to go one day that’s written down and taped on your bedroom wall or a mental list, every adventurous person has some sort of travel bucket list.

What inspires us to travel? Sometimes it’s other people’s stories of travel and other times it’s movies. When we see one of our favorite actors in a gorgeous foreign country, we feel more inclined to go to that place and explore. These are some movies that will surely inspire your travel bucket list.

“Eat Pray Love”

Julia Roberts stars as Elizabeth Gilbert in this memoir turned movie. After years of marriage, Elizabeth decides to get divorced and travel for a year. She starts her travels in Italy where she learns how to speak Italian and tries her hardest not to fall in love. Then she travels to India and Bali to work on her yoga and meditation.

If you’ve ever wanted to just pick up and leave your current life but need some inspiration, “Eat Pray Love” is the movie to watch. Elizabeth’s jump into adventure is enough motivation for anyone.

“Mamma Mia” & “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again”

Even if musicals aren’t your favorite, these two movies will inspire you to put Greece on your travel bucket list. In the sequel, we find out just how Donna found herself on a Greek island running a hotel. After graduating from college she decided she didn’t want to go home and just wanted to travel until she found herself. So, she travels from England to Paris and ends up in Greece.

If you’ve ever wanted to start your life in a new country, “Mamma Mia” and its sequel will have you inspired to explore and settle wherever your heart desires.

“Midnight in Paris”

Woody Allen’s film “Midnight in Paris” stars Owen Wilson as a timid man who needs to learn how to have some fun. So, while on vacation in Paris with his fiancé he discovers a mysterious and magical world after midnight. He enjoys the roaring 1920s with Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Picasso in this magic surrealist movie.

If you love literature and romance or fashion and food, Paris is a city for everyone. Enjoy its history and fine cuisines and the beauty of the Eiffel Tower in this movie before you book your ticket and cross one more city off your travel bucket list.

“Under the Tuscan Sun”

In the rolling hills of Italy, Frances finds herself buying a beautiful Tuscan villa after her divorce from her husband. It’s here that she finds love and true happiness. This movie will give you that extra push to do something some may consider crazy, especially if you feel that it’s the right choice for you.

How anyone could watch “Under the Tuscan Sun” and not want to visit Italy is a mystery. A country filled with tradition, gorgeous scenery, history, pasta, and wine, it’s a place everyone should have down on their travel bucket list.

“The Lizzie McGuire Movie”

It may be a movie for the preteen crowd, but it’s one that will inspire you to go to Rome. Hilary Duff takes her television show character, Lizzie McGuire, to the big screen when Lizzie goes on a school trip to Rome before starting high school. It’s here that she finds herself wrapped up in love with a famous musician who turns out to be a fraud.

If you watched this movie when you were younger, Rome has always been on your travel bucket list.

“The Beach”

Feast your eyes on a young Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Beach.” When Richard decides that he needs some more excitement in his life, he decides to head off to Thailand. He starts in Bangkok, an already boisterous and crazy city. After finding a map to an island he decides to go there with some friends. The movie turns into an action thriller that will keep you at the edge of your seat.

You can admire the beautiful blue waters of Thailand on the island of Ko Phi Phi, where the movie was filmed. It’s extremely affordable for travelers, so there’s no excuse not to put this destination on your travel bucket list. You’ll lay on the beach every day, eat pad Thai, and meet people from all over the world on this self-dubbed party island.

Start Your Travel Bucketlist

If you don’t have a travel bucket list, watch one of these movies and you’ll be sure to make one. On the next rainy day, watch a movie marathon where the characters are in foreign countries. If that doesn’t get your travel bug to start itching, I’m not sure what will. Just remember, life is too short not to cross things off of your travel bucket list.
